I did not actually end up using this rod. However, it was shipped exactly as described. Definitely very hard carbon steel, in the shape of a rod. Very challenging to cut; I used a cutoff wheel on a Dremel tool and it worked with some minor frustration. If, in the future, I am in the market for another carbon steel rod available in small quantities on Amazon Prime, I will definitely consider this rod.

Well its a steel rod. I use this to make rings for my chain mail projects.

Well, its round, about a foot long and the ends arent quite square, but its almost exactly what is described. Im down rating this because it has a 4 inch long i wide UPC label stuck to the working surface of the rod. I need to slide close tolerance bearings onto this rod and Ive spent the last 30 minutes trying to scrape the label off without scratching the surface. I would be willing to pay twice the price if I could be certain that they were not going to put stickers on.

I was looking at my small cnc lathe , and a brilliant idea came over me like bed sheets fresh out of the dryer. All i needed was some 3/4 steel rod , preferably 1018 , something affordable and prone to good finishes with carbide inserts.. Amazon had no 3/4 rod through prime , thats when I found this 1 with next day prime delivery.. excellent rod.. the end

This review is for steel bar - 1 inch diameter and 12 inches long. I am using this as a lock shaft to replace the chain in use now. I will weld a top (think nail head) on this bar and drill a 1/2 inch hole in the bottom for the lock.

The 5 metal rods were delivered as specified. They were in excellent condition. They were used in a Science project to test how fast heat travels through different materials. Highly recommended. Ed perez

    Greater than one week

I got the 1 inch diameter, 24 inch long 1018 carbon steel round rod. It measured just a hair over 24 inches long. And according to my calipers, its slightly over 0.999 in diameter. Perfect size. It does have a large UPC label, but unlike a previous review, the label was fairly easy to peel off. Using just my fingernail, I peeled it off mostly in one piece. There was some minor sticky residue and a shred of torn label left over, but I sprayed a little WD-40 on there and wiped it right off with a paper towel. It took about 2 minutes to get all traces of the label off with no damage to the bar. (This was in my freezing cold basement shop. I bet it would peel off easier if it was warm.)

Im using this round stock for trailer axles. It is good quality and best priced.

The 1018 carbon steel round rod has been cold finished, has an unpolished (mill) surface, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A108 specifications, and has a standard tolerance. The 1018 carbon steel grade has low carbon content for a balance of strength, machinability, formability, and weldability. This material can be heat treated for higher hardness. The rod has been cold finished, a process of removing the outer layer to achieve the specified dimensions.

Steel is an iron alloy with carbon and other elements that modify the steel to achieve specific properties. In general, steels with higher carbon content have greater strength, hardness, and wear resistance, while those with lower carbon content have more formability, weldability, and toughness. Carbon steels, which include most AISI-SAE grades in the 1000 range, are classified by their level of carbon content as low (below 0.3%), medium (0.3% to 0.6%) and high (0.6% and above). Alloy steels, which include AISI-SAE grades in the 1300 and 4000 ranges and above, incorporate elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and nickel to modify properties like machinability and corrosion resistance. Tool steels, which include most grades with a letter and number grade designation, have high carbide content for wear resistance, high hardness, and the ability to hold a cutting edge. Some tool steels are designed to resist deformation when used in elevated temperatures.

Tensile strength, used to indicate a material’s overall strength, is the peak stress it can withstand before it breaks. Wear resistance indicates the ability to prevent surface damage caused by contact with other surfaces. Toughness describes the material"s ability to absorb energy before breaking, while hardness (commonly measured as indentation hardness) describes its resistance to permanent surface deformation. Formability indicates how easily the material can be permanently shaped. Machinability describes how easily it can be cut, shaped, finished, or otherwise machined, while weldability characterizes the ability to be welded.
