The rubber surface keeps the dry food bowl from sliding around and, of course, the included bowl rests securely in the recessed area of the mat. I wanted a second bowl for the canned food so I could always have a clean one ready at meal times, but the manufacturer advised they dont sell the bowls separately. However, I decided to try the 6.83 fl. oz. bowl in the Catit Single Dish (and Double Dish) holders
