The operative thing in using this device safely is to always test it first on a circuit known to be live. The reason is that it is battery operated and if the batteries are weak or arent making a good internal connection to the device, you may not get a reading. That said this tester is much better than the one I had previously from a different manufacture, which had a press-on cap that would often come loose when trying to switch the unit on. On this one, the cap screws on and the switch is a momentary contact pushbutton making it much more reliable. Because it is dual range, read the directions carefully. I copied the instruction chart to keep with the unit because I dont use it often.

Klein is the best in the industry and this set is a must have for doing light switches and outlets. From confirming that you switched off the right breaker to confirming that you have proper ground to your outlet, this set will take care of the bulk of your needs in doing your home/business electrical work.
