I am so happy that I purchased Lactation Labs kit. I was following a Vegan diet and my doctors were concerned my breast milk wouldnt have the protein and fat content necessary to feed my baby. After taking the test, I saw that my numbers in those categories exceeded average, and it gave me and my medical team peace of mind. I also saw that I was lower in B12 and Iron, which I am now supplementing into my diet. I would 100% recommend everyone test their breast milk to know how they can best support the health of their babies!

Dr. Canale contacted me herself and explained my lab results thoroughly. She also gave recommendations as how to increase the Calcium and B12 in my breast milk and what foods to eat so that I can provide the best quality milk for my little one possible. The milk collection kit itself was also easy to use. When it comes to being a Mum and worrying about your baby’s food source, I am happy to have Lactation Lab available to me, to give me valuable information about the quality of my breast milk. M. Loved the kit. It was great to get personalized report on our milk nutrition and suggestions for supplements or food to improve certain areas. I was impressed by the speed too I believe I got my report in less than a week since I shipped the sample.

I eat a nutritious and balanced diet but I have malabsorption and was worried about the quality of my milk. I was happy to find that milk testing is possible and very easy to do. Everything was simple and straightforward as far as doing the test. Dr. Canale assured me that the overall quality of my milk was good but I was actually sad to find that my malabsorption is affecting my milk to some degree. But that is something I needed to know for my babys sake. I have been taking the additional supplements that were reccomended as well as a few others that my doctor reccomended when I brought the results in to him. After doing the retest the vitamin A in my milk is now at a healthy level so that was good to see. The calcium is still optimal and that was reassuring. But some of the other vitamins had gotten lower in spite of supplementing. So I am following up with my doctor for additional help in making sure my baby and I get the nutrients we need. As we get him more and more nutrients he is tending to sleep better most nights and he continues to thrive. Although overall my baby was thriving and my health is fairly good this did teach me some things about my health and my baby and I are doing better as a result. Additionally my baby has benign sleep jerks that had become worse. An EEG confirmed that they are not seizure related. We have found that even though they are still present, they are improving significantly as we increase his nutrition. I am very happy to have gotten my milk tested even though my test results were less than perfect, because in my case it opened my eyes to potential nutritional deficiencies and hopefully before they caused a major issue for my baby. Im also glad that I got the retest because it let me know that some things had improved whereas other areas still needed some tweaking. I would highly reccomend getting the nutritional content of your milk tested if you can and lactation lab makes it simple. I would love to see them test for more vitamins. This is a very nice service to breastfeeding moms!

This product is genius! I try and eat a very clean and healthy diet for myself and my baby but I’m not perfect. This test showed me where I am a bit deficient and now I can focus on incorporating other foods into my diet. I love it!! I wouldn’t have known any other way and was kinda shocked by some of the results. Highly recommend and would buy to test again in a few months to see if they’ve improved.

I have a bachelors in nutrition so when my sons pediatrician suggested my breast milk might not have enough calories I went on a search. Lactation lab has approval by the FDA as a breakthrough device for testing breast milk. I was thrilled to get the box which was easy to use and mail out. Got my results in 2 days before my sons next pediatrician visit. Able to show everyone that my milk was and is enough for my big boy. Thank you!

I had a great experience with my Lactation Lab kit. It was easy to send my sample and I got the results quickly. The results were paired with clear action items, like which supplements to take (in my case it was iron, C, and B12). Overall this was a straightforward way to evaluate my nutrition and improve the healthiness of my baby and me.

Milk Collection

The process begins once you receive your kit. Since the nutritional content of your milk can change throughout each pumping session, we recommend collecting a small amount of milk as you pump throughout the day. Note that although diet directly affects the quantity of nutrients present, it can take a week or two them to appear in your milk.

Ship Sample to Lactation Lab

Your kit includes everything needed to prepare your sample. We provide all necessary packaging to ship your milk. Once you"ve returned your sample to us (prepaid shipping is included), it takes about a week to process the sample in our state-of-the-art lab facility.

Once we have completed testing, your results are immediately emailed to you as PDF explaining the importance of each measurement and suggestions for how to help improve the quality of your milk.

What We Test and Why

protein lab resultprotein lab result

Fats

The amount of fat in milk is related to infant growth. It is essential for the metabolism of vitamins needed for neurodevelopment and is the main source of calories. Increasing dietary fat consumption, especially omega fatty acids, can increase the fat content in breast milk.

Calories

This is a measure of the energy content of the milk. The major contributors are fats, carbohydrates and proteins. It is estimated that a breastfeeding woman should be consuming a minimum of an extra 500 calories per day.

Protein

It is estimated that protein supplies 8-10% of a baby’s energy requirements. Proteins are important for immune and neurological function, and are the building blocks for tissues, muscle and bones. Low levels should prompt you to discuss your dietary intake with your doctor.

Carbohydrates

Breast milk contains unique sugars which help fuel growth and brain development. Lactose is the main sugar in breast milk and it helps decrease the amount of unhealthy bacteria in the stomach. It also helps with the absorption of key nutrients and minerals.

Calcium

This mineral is important for skeletal structure, essential for cell, muscle and nerve function and for blood clotting. Supplementation can increase calcium levels in milk. Low levels should prompt a discussion with your doctor.

Iron

Essential for blood cell production and carries oxygen from lungs to tissues. Low levels have been associated with anemia in mothers.

Vitamin A

Belongs to a family of compounds called retinoids which are important for vision, bone growth and supporting a healthy immune system. If your levels are low, you should discuss your results with your healthcare provider and assess your intake (diet and supplements).

Vitamin C

An antioxidant and important building block for collagen and connective tissue as well as iron absorption. Low levels should prompt you to discuss with your healthcare provider.

Vitamin B12

Maintains healthy nerve cells and helps in the production of DNA and RNA, the body"s genetic material. It is important for overall metabolism, formation of red blood cells and for maintenance of the central nervous system.

Lactation Lab was born out of personal experience as a mother and a doctor

In both her medical practice and when breastfeeding her own children, Dr. Stephanie Canale grew frustrated that no resources existed for testing breast milk. After the birth of her second child, she discovered she had iron-deficiency anemia and hereditarily low B-12 levels, and that her daughter had developed spina bifida. She wondered how things might have been different, had she known exactly what she was feeding her daughter. At that moment, she made it her mission to find a solution that would empower moms with the information she"d wished she had.

As a mother of two, Dr. Canale has a profound passion for helping families. She is a tireless advocate for moms and babies, on a constant quest to develop tools and support for families of all backgrounds and income levels.

Dr. Canale earned both her undergraduate and medical degrees from McGill University. She completed her residency training in Family Medicine at UCLA, and joined UCLA Santa Monica in 2010, where she currently practices. She is a member of the American Board of Family Medicine.
