If you are looking at the various Classic Lego sets and trying to decide between a medium size set like #11021 or this one, #11020, the largest of the Classic assortments, you should know that in the end you will never have all the parts you need. I can very easily recommend all of the Classic sets, but in the end, there is no perfect, do-it-all collection of bricks unless you actually work at Lego. In Denmark. One good way to distinguish between the sets is to look up the manuals for each on the Lego website (customer help section). You will be able to see what various suggested models to build, and while kids dont need to follow the directions, many will use them for inspiration. The manuals give you a good idea of the utility of each set (e.g., how many wheels are there? Or joint pieces?). Even though these are general brick collections, they have been curated to have certain strengths. This set comes with four manuals that organize builds by color: red, green, blue, and yellow. There are a number of very useful building plates. The models vary in scale from micro-mini figure size to almost Duplo size. There are no mini figures in the set. I actually think all of the Classic brick sets have special value, from the whimsical Space Mission set to the retro 90 Years of Play set. I absolutely would not feel compelled to buy the biggest one, but rather to match the set with the interests of the child. My feeling on the suggested builds on this set is that it is geared primarily toward cool little designs, not so much building things that kids are going to play with. These are ingenious little designs, from the hummingbird feeding from a flower, suspended by its beak, to a small, partly peeled banana. It is very much a build it, admire it, then break it down and put it away kind of box. The box, by the way, is sturdy cardboard with dividers to allow some amount of organization.

As I write this, LEGO 11020 Build Together set is the second largest in the Classic theme, just behind 11022 Space Mission. But this set comes with larger pieces – including 5 16x16 – plates and is geared towards general building. The box must also be factored into the price given that can be reused as a piece organizer with 3 build trays. Very useful! The box measures approximately 23 inches wide, 13 inches deep and 4 inches high. When put together, there are 6 equal sized troughs to hold sorted pieces. The three included trays fit on top of the dividers and can be used to hold build in progress, the big plates and manuals. This is the most functional LEGO box that I have ever encountered. Speaking of the instructions, there are four books that each cover three sets of numbered bags. That does help focus building to a few colors at a time with small representative builds. From there one can then free build with all the colors colors. Included are also two double-sided challenge cards to test one’s building skills. The 1601 pieces in this set span a nice gamut of LEGO pieces, with 496 different piece types and 41 different colors, to be precise. I think I got that right. LEGO has, of course, way more than 496 piece types and 41 colors actively in production but IMO this set contains a good cross section and is an excellent introduction to the LEGO world. I am a bit disappointed with the lack of dark tan and dark brown pieces and the low number of pieces in tan, reddish brown and others in the same color family. But there’s only so much that LEGO can put into one general set. Overall this is set is a winner as are many of the sets in the Classic theme. Let the creativity flow!

Building huge Lego models like the Harry Potter castle is quite an experience, and I am very glad I did it, but once its done, I am very reluctant to tear it apart again. The same is true for the Lego playsets, where the value in the set is the final built product to play with. You cant play with it if you tear it apart. This set gets back to the origins of Lego, with small models that can spur creativity, and plenty of bricks for children to experiment with their own builds. This is how Lego was in my childhood, where a play session started out with a coffee can full of loose bricks, and ended up the same way.

There are tons of blocks. There are instructions for making 30-40 small creatures, and you can make all of the creatures without having to disassemble any that youve already made. My 6 and 3 year old daughters loved building out all of these and putting them in a pen.

My 4 year old son is very creative and also watches cartoons too much. I decided to splurge on this to get him doing less of the latter and more creative time. He absolutely loves this set, he builds all kinds of things, we do it together too. There’s SO much you can do with these it’s a great set. You can build your own things or use the books. It’s got him watching a-lot less tv and we bond when we build, I enjoy it also. If you’re thinking about getting it I definitely advise it!

Our son is a lego fanatic. He loves to build cities so whenever we can add just the basic lego bricks to his collection we do it. This would be a nice stater set to anyone that wants to start a large collection as it has most of the basics in lots of colors

If you are looking for a great building set of legos I would highly recommend this classic set. It has everything you need to have a great base set of all the Lego pieces to build whatever creative idea comes to mind. I love Legos and have some in my classroom, but this building set really jump started an amazing bin of Legos that my elementary kids absolutely love. There are a ton of colors to choose from, each separated into their own bags. Each bag is actually several builds that you can do, there are wonderful instruction books that are full of step by step instructions for building cars, plants, animals and buildings. My son and I had a blast going through each bag and making things in each color set. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about this classic Lego set. It has a ton of classic and unique pieces to build with. It has every color you could want. And it has five instruction books full of great ideas for kids to build. This keeps my kids building for hours, I really like everything about it!

I bought these Lego’s for my grandchildren’s upcoming Christmas. It’s the second time buying Lego’s—bigger set this time—because they love to spend time creating figures and such. Great entertainment and brain exercise for the whole family!
