> 24 hourinstall the app via sudo apt install gqrx-sdr then just run it. pick the usb device as shown in the dialog box, here. there are many other apps but this was an easy one to get running. also gnu-radio and so on. Im interested in decoding HD fm radio and there is a plugin or app on github for that. later.. update: got it working with nrsc5 to decode HD radio for free ;) simply run the nrsc5 program with the frequency in mhz and the program (0 or 1, usually) inside the HD sideband: eg, nrsc5 88.5 0. last image shows the console output when you run it on an hd radio channel that is active.

> 24 hourThe RTL SDR and the NOelec are the best two SDR dongles for the money. The RTL SDR dongle is my personal favorite, it brings in weak signals.

> 24 hourThis is my 3rd SDR, first of this design. The case doesnt vent and it gets intensely overheated. If you are savvy you can write your own programs with auto shutdowns for cool off periods. But it cools slowly, no venting, not well heatsink. It will spend more time off than on. If you just let it run, it will cook itself to death. Either ingot a bad unit or this design is garbage.

> 24 hourI used this with a Ham it up convertor to get back into Shortwave and Navigational Beacon DXing. It worked, but I eventually moved up to an AirSpy, Also, upgrading your PCs soundcard gives you maximum bandwidth on the waterfall display. I upgraded to an older Delta M card and it worked a treat. As with everything radio, the secret is antenna, antenna and more antenna. No indoor antenna is going to allow you to hear much beyond super strong signals that can overcome the RFI you your and your neighbors modern house generates. And here is where the Airspy out shines the RTL-SDR. Noticeable difference in the amount of noise received by the RTL-SDR vs. the Airspy. Bottom line is if you are going to go the the trouble of installing antennas (the heart of the system after all) then I would go to something more expensive than the SDR-RTL. But it does provide a lot of bang for the buck, especially for occasional listening or trying out listening for a newcomer.

> 24 hourI had previously bought one of the cheep RTL-SDR receivers for $20 when they came out just to try it out. For the price of this, it is a very good deal. I received it, unplugged my old and plugged in this one and it worked perfectly. I love the work they have done on the front end of this receiver, it makes a big difference on reception, also all around changes that make this RTL-SDR a very good improvement over my first one. I recommend this receiver for anyone wanting to get into, or see what RTL-SDR is all about. For the money, its the best deal I have found.

> 24 hourI have about 10 of these in use now. I have been very happy with these little SDR receivers. Several stream to Broadcastify Calls without a hitch. You MUST follow the install guide on the RTL-SDR website to properly install software. It isnt hard if you just follow step by step.
