UPDATE: Less than a week after release, Nintendo and Bamco released a patch adjusting the matchmaker, so now Preferred Rules actually work as expected. In my several hours of play so far, looking for 1v1 No Items, I havent been placed in a single FFA or 2v2 or Items On, and almost every match matched exactly my preferred settings. So now the biggest flaw of this game is just about nonexistent. ORIGINAL REVIEW Its Smash Bros. Of course its going to be good. But this game knocks it out of the park on so many fronts and only missteps in one right now that its hard to give it anything less than 5 stars. Ive played it like 20 hours in the past 2-3 days since release. - This may be a point of division, but I LOVE THAT YOU ONLY START WITH 8 CHARACTERS. I love the constant flow of unlocking and growing your roster. Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U started with almost all characters unlocked, and it removed a lot of incentive to play singleplayer or to try out new characters. It made opening up the game the first time overwhelming and mad hard to choose whom to try out, and to this day I still have barely used some characters in that game. In Ultimate, starting with fewer characters means newcomers to the series dont get overwhelmed, theres incentive to try new characters as you unlock them, and theres a constant sense of growth. You unlock characters super fast too, with very clear and guaranteed unlock guidelines. - Ridiculously well balanced cast. Ive unlocked like 50 characters so far and thus far, none of them feel bad or unviable or absolutely broken above the rest of the cast. Every previous Smash game had this issue--maybe this one will too, but so far Id been amazing being able to pick literally anyone and have a good time. - Classic Mode is possibly the best its ever been. Melee made some great leaps in making Classic Mode better. Then Brawl did more of the same, Smash 3DS did more of the same, and Smash Wii U was a bit all over the place. This Classic Mode is tailor-made for each character and the attention to detail mixes from impressive (Classic with Isabelle, for example, has you fighting against only the female cast) to downright hilarious (Wii Fit Trainer has you fighting against the...larger opponents in the game). There are also a bigger variety of boss battles than ever, and I havent fought a single one yet that wasnt well-designed. - World of Light is essentially themed Events Mode with an RPG system and malleable difficulty. - The gameplay is so damn fun. The pacing is breakneck, but you always feel like you have the opportunity to get right back into the action. Characters fly around fast, but TIP: Follow the smoke trails because theyre the best way to trace your character if you get hit hard! Melee will always have the most technical and hard gameplay in the series, but Ultimate has a very similar gameplay flow (favoring aggressive play with momentum, versus defensive and campy play) while being much easier for newcomers to pick up. - Spirits are surprisingly addictive. When you recognize one from a game youve played and see how they hand-crafted that challenge, its always damn satisfying. - Presentation is absolutely superb. The music and visuals are so above-and-beyond, its hard to not be super appreciative of just that. - Overall, just so much content. 74 fighters, 103 stages, Battlefield and Omega Modes for every one, Stage Hazards toggle, saved custom rulesets, over 900 music tracks...this game could be $100 and still be worth it right now. Only one misstep: The online. Preferred rulesets is a great idea, but right now theres not nearly as much priority on player orientation (1v1, 2v2, FFA) as there should be. I dont like wanting to go in for 1v1s and only get them 60% of the time. Fix that, and all of the new improvements theyve made to the online will shine. Doesnt hold me back from giving it an easy five stars though.

There is no chance whatsoever of playing with anyone online. The game lags so horribly, youll be grabbing someone one second, and the next second youll be off the screen because they apparently smashed you. Check the real reviews online, away from Amazon. Online play is horrible. Nintendo needs to synchronize a little better amigo.
