This is a deep but excellent discussion of what the law is for and what it is not for. How Liberty of the individual is a high goal. Government should only be there to stop injustice, nothing more.

This classic text challenges readers to think, not just about politics but even the language, and the history behind the authors words. Challenge a high school mind with a text like this on each of these fronts and todays graduating classes could rise to the day. I am a 24 year old and can only just now understand why Bastiats name rings in the annals of history and I wish I had in or before college. If you arent certain this book is what you are looking for, buy it anyway, you wont regret it for a second!

A voice from the past eloquently presenting a rational inquiry, slightly dated, about what it means to have rational Law. A model of possible perfection that will unfortunately fail to impress the gullible and faint of heart. The only true Shield against the Iron Fist of mob rule and oppressive government. A must read for all who cherish Freedom. And be able to distinguish reality from fantasy.

In 1850 a French guy wrote this little essay on the Law. It could have been written today in the US, in Europe, because we are certainly not progressing in terms of common-sense, politically. Here are some ideas: -Justice is the absence of injustice. Nothing more than that. -What God does is well done. Do not claim to know more than Him. The fact that this rule is almost universally broken says much about our level of hubris. For Bastiat Law is a minus, it takes away. His subject is so relevant today that we can see the results of the States false philanthropy, just as Orwell warned us in his Animal Farm. Western governments certainly know how to belittle us... we couldnt do without them. In Spain we have this government commercial encouraging drivers to drive well: We cant drive for you! They wished. The only idea that they think about it tells how far theyve got under our skin. This book is dynamite. Makes one see the world today in a clear and detached way. Who are the philanthropists that we owe so much devotion to? Take Gores greedy schemes with his mineral mines behind his climactic facade. Take another homeless, Soros, the preacher of the Left, whose God is money. To be a Pharisee is indeed to love the Law while hating man, to use the Law to make Injustice legal, to pervert Justice, to become a new god to modern State worshippers, wellfare addicts. Yes, Bastiat would sure be ashamed to see what the West has become: the legalized plunder by the State.

One of the best books I ever read. Bastiat is a sheer genius! We have been swindled, our liberties have been chipped away and our freedom has been usurped by the government that in the name of justice robs the talented and just, creates a huge spread for itself and gives a few morsels here and there to the dumb, lazy and degenerate mob which by default is just as unjust as the government as it contributes to this very robbery by electing the government into the public office. And this entire enterprise is backboned on the pseudo-academia - the basket-weaving Ph.D.s of the basket-weaving universities who day after day crank out a study after as study to provide theoretical support for this mass injustice. On behalf of the American nation, I would like to thank everyone that participated in publishing this amazing book. P.S. I would also highly recommend the following books: 1. One of the best essays ever on the proper role of government.

This short book (about 55 pages) just confirms the old adage that some things never change. King Solomon wrote centuries ago that there is nothing new under the son while in other places it explains selfish self serving politicians cant be trusted. Still other scriptures explain, mankind is inherently selfish, self-serving motivated by greed, fame and fortune. I dont know if the author was a Christian as I have only made it to page 30 with highlighted sections on almost every page. But he was definitely a fan of the freedoms promised to Americans in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. How little did he know that the southern Democrats would start the US civil war that would prove where ever Socialists get elected into office, its just a matter of time before their elitest Jim Crow like laws will steal citizens liberty. Self serving corrupt politicians believe their intelligence is superior to their subjects and will say anything to convince the masses that with empty promises of equality their edicts will lead to prosperity. Instead it leads to insecurity, oppression, servitude and poverty of the masses. If you dont understand how or why the Socialist agenda always leads to a society of enslaved subjects this book will explain it in plain English. If only it was required reading for every American that was seeking a job at all levels of government and every branch of government. Maybe than Americans liberty would not be vanishing like a sunset over the horizon before your last breath on earth. The timeless truths of scripture of the sinful and corrupt nature of man governing with selfish desire and control were confirmed in biblical times. Again in the 1850s by this author and are today on every MSM news show around the globe. Godless men governing by pride, selfish control and desire seem to infect and destroy every country, and its peoples hope to survive tyranny from dictators around the globe. Sin is a heart condition that is only subdued by an intentional personal relationship with Jesus Christ as mankind learns to love others as themselves and seek what is right, true and honest for all of Gods creation. Partisan politics promoting class warfare, hate, violence, and the Socialist religions based on mans theories (evolution, class warfare, lawlessness, sexual promiscuity, population control, climate change, CRT, etc) in every country around the globe inevitably result in oppression, persecution, depression and death of the people at the hands of dictators and tyrants. Read this book and maybe youll begin to understand why the socialist agenda always creates this vicious cycle of hatred and oppression that kills every nation infected by these socialist poisons promoted to the people while protecting the selfish interests of the wealthy tyrants in charge. If Gods people will humble themselves and pray, and turn from their wicked ways, God will hear their prayers and heal their land.

This proto-libertarian writing by Bastiat stands along with Alexis de Tocqueville as the greatest 19th century political writing contributions to our country. Bastiat is easier to read and much faster. The whole of it in a sitting can be trying to read, though it did sparkle throughout. In any event, Bastiats view would likely be a libertarianism that few would suggest today. For example, even most modern libertarians and conservatives with libertarian streaks like lead-free paint. He might say it interferes with individual property and liberty rights. I really do not know where he would hold on that because though it would interfere with private property, but lead paint clearly was a threat to us, particularly small children and a 20th century Bastiat might appreciate it. Heres a taste of Bastiat I copied onto my computer: Law was the collective organization of the individual right to lawful defense. [T]he common force that protects this collective right cannot logically have any other purpose or any other mission that that for which it acts as a substitute. Thus, since an individual cannot lawfully use force against the person, liberty, or property of another individual, then the common force—for the same reason—cannot lawfully be used to destroy the person, liberty, or property of individuals or groups. The law has been perverted by the influence of two entirely different causes: stupid greed and false philanthropy. . . [E]very time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. . . We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want to religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain. Like or love it? Youll like or love him. Offended and love Obamacare and federal governments growth? You will think he is a proto-wing-nut.

The only real downside to this book is vocabulary and the writing style. The content is excellent, but the delivery is of a style and usage of language that modern readers are not familiar with.
