i been looking for a harddrive ever send i got my computer. i sound this one and for the price that it was i want ahead and got it.. the head drive looks nice and i like the way it feel in the hands.. and i like that it not to big like other harddrive. the only thing that i didnt is the setup it took me forever to set it up and at one point was very close to send it back. but the rest i like and it work very well that sometime i forget that i have a hdd..

I am modifying my earlier review (below the line) to add this note: After purchasing a different brand and experiencing the same problem, I again contacted Apple. Though initially I was again told that the problem was not associated with their OS, I was now convinced it was and so was more persistent. After some back and forth, i finally spoke to people there who confirmed that the problem described below is a known problem for the Sierra and High Sierra OSs. (Note: I havent checked again in the last few weeks, so it is theoretically possible that it has been fixed since I last spoke with Apple.) Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that the problem I mentioned in my previous review now appears more likely to have been an Apple, and not WD, caused problem. I also would like to repeat the nice things I said about WD: In my interactions with their technical support, I have usually spoken with very nice, very capable people working in their customer support group and Ive had nothing but good experiences with my two previous purchases of WD external drives. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** I hesitated about what star rating to give. I am returning this product for the reason that I will explain momentarily, which might suggest a 1-2 star rating. However, I still very much like my older versions of this same drive, which I would give 5 stars to. I also think highly of WDs customer service. If a person doesnt have the same needs I have, I would say, Buy this, and hopefully you will fare as well with it as I have with my older drives. However, for Mac users, you may want to read on. The problem I had with this device: It does not appear to be fully compatible with Time Machine. I formatted this for a Mac using the journalled, encrypted option in Disk Utility. The WD web site also indicated that this is an appropriate way to prepare device for use with Macs, and this is how I prepared my older WD drives and all has been well with them. This time, I formatted the drive the same way. However, the second time I plugged the drive into my computer and tried to unlock the drive, there was no way to get the password hint to display. I repeated the process of reformatting the disk 4 or 5 times, each time entering a password and hint, and each time got the same result. The nice technician at WD found the same instructions on their website that I was following, got a drive like the one I was using, plugged it into a Mac, did the same things I did, then experienced the same problem. The tech suggested that I could try to use the device with WDs own utilities as a work around, but I explained that I had a strong bias towards using the utilities that came with my computer and never would have purchased had I known that it was no longer fully compatible with disk utility/Time Machine. Bottom line: if you are a Mac user and like to encrypt your external drives using disk utility and want to be able to see your password hint, you may want to pass on this drive for the time being, or at least call WDs customer service directly to find out if this bug has been fixed. Beyond this, I really have had great experience with WD, both with their devices and with the folks at their customer service the few times Ive called. i currently have two other WD drives: one 1+ year old and the other 5+ years old. I generally back up every week. Both of these older units have given me no problems at all. The only reason I was buying this drive was because Im getting nervous in view of the age of my older drive., having read about so many drives failing after 3 or so years.

I really love the metal part of the case, and a functioning drive light, unlike the power lite on the competitors. Flawless operation, but loaded with a little bit of bloatware. Easy to remove. Its a little portable drive like a lot of others, but a higher quality and will win beauty contests. I take it to all the computers in the house to back them up, sure beats buying a separate drive sitting by every computer. Better and faster than the other leading brand. Just buy it!

I purchased this in February 19th, 2015, as my previous 1 TB passport stopped working. I purchased a hard shell case as I would be storing important data and didnt want the drive the stop working as my previous one did. Every-time I used it, I would handle it with the utmost care as I felt my previous passport failed as I let it roll around in my knapsack. Three months later, when I was staring the drive up, it stopped working. I could hear and see the light functioning, but it was not opening up all the data I had stored on it. I tried multiple times over the next several weeks but no response from the drive. 70% of the items I had on this drive, I backed up to several USB drives, so I still have these files, the rest is gone. This is twice I purchased a WD Passport and it has failed, I will not be purchasing or recommending this product.

Pros: Low noise, smooth operation, and great sizing. Cons: After spending four hours moving my movies from my primary computer to this external, when I moved to another location assuming my files had finished transferred, none of the movies transferred over and or was wiped off the drive without my permission.

A sturdy WD hard drive, purchased on sale. Sure the bottom is plastic, but the top makes the drive feel more robust than the all plastic models. It seems to operate like any other WD hard drive. I have no complaints. I cant wait for the day when a 2TB SSD costs this little.

After researching and reading multiple reviews of portable backup devices, I chose the WD 3TB Passport. The device is a small enough for me to carry with me after backing up my computer. Backing up is as simple as connecting the Passport to my computer with the cable that came with the device, and hitting my backup icon on my computer. The WD Passport is working well for me without any known issues.

Its a nice little drive. I bought this to replace my last laptop backup drive, I tend to give them away when helping friends with a system restore. I always stick to WD stuff because Ive had the best luck with it. I havent seen any reviews that cite performance figures for this drive, so I really wanted to post my personal results. I ordered the 2TB variant. For the following speed tests the disk was formatted in NTFS. On MacOSX Seq. Read: 102 MB/s Seq. Write: 100.6 MB/s Under Windows 7 Seq. Read: 112.7 MB/s Seq. Write: 111.9 MB/s The size of the drive is good, the 2TB version feels a little thick, it is about 2mm thicker than my Retina MacBook Pro. In length and width this is the smallest WD portable Ive ever had. The weight is good, lighter than most metal cased WD drives Ive had for sure. The texture on the top is a nice aesthetic touch, but seems impossible to clean without leaving a streak. Overall the finish looks lovely, but it doesnt seem to be holding up very well, after a few days in my briefcase (not a very hostile environment) its gotten 2 scratches revealing the aluminum below. As I was preparing to move abroad as volunteer for 2 years with the US Peace Corps, I bought this device to store over 1 TB of movies. I really needed this device. I left America in September 2017 and this device was working great until it randomly stopped working in November 2017. It only lasted 2 months of use when it gave me a fatal device hardware error I have tried everything to clear it....drivers, you name it... and I fear it is unsavable...the device and the 1 TB of movies on it. This has given me some a lot of unneeded stress of staying up late, researching and attempting to fix it. When this device failed, I had very limited access to the internet. I am very much disappointed in this product and the money I spent on it. I would not recommend anyone to buy it.

Outside is sturdy with a good finish that cleans easily even thought its a textured surface. Solid construction and the cable connection is firm and has not worn out from being unplugged/replugged many times. Does not produce very much noise but it can get warm. The manufacturer could do one thing to improve this product. I like to store my movie library on my passport and I usually plug it into my laptop or smart TV and watch in a dark environment. The LED status light on the passport is too damn bright! the blinking is distracting in a dark room so I put a piece of tape over it, but I think a better design would be to dim the light a bit. Once had an issue with connecting to my laptop, it was not found by my device driver. I had to unplug/replug a few times and restart my computer before it would recognized. The issue has not repeated itself since that one time so I am not taking any starts off for that.
