I have nothing really to add here in regards to specs, speed, etc. I just want to clarify that this is simply the successor to the old Passport line from Western Digital. Because the case looks (and actually is) a little sturdier, some folks assume this is an upgraded version of sorts. Its not. It contains the same drive inside as the previous version. The case is just a bit bigger, and more rectangle in shape. There is a bit more clearance between the drive inside and the plastic housing, so in theory it might make this a tad more sturdy in the event of a very slight drop. This is NOT a military grade case. Think of it as a design change with POSSIBLY a little more protection. This new design will take up more space than the old style, which may or may not be an issue for you. The old design usually meant that the black case was the cheapest, and you had to pay extra for colors, usually about $10 more or so. Right now, you have a better chance to get a color case at the same price as the black ones than before. Its possible this is just an introductory price though. One odd thing is that when you order on Amazon, you may get the For Mac version - even if you order just the regular Windows version. The drive itself is identical, the only difference is the file format on the drive, which you can change. If you get a Mac version (HSF format) you can easily change it to Windows (NTFS), and vice versa. Newer Macs can actually read and write NTFS (write-option might be hidden) so this might be a moot point anyway. Why not 5 stars then if its all the same? Because ITS THE SAME. I expected faster drives inside for 2016. Instead, performance seems to be about the same as Passports from 3 years ago. There are no additional connectivity options either. At this point, WD should be able to add USB-C in addition to USB 3. It likely came down to cost, but considering how so many newer laptops and desktops from Apple and most PC-makers now include USB-C, I think one of the biggest hard drive makers should include this option now. If you purchase any of the newer Apple laptops, its all about USB-C now. So these drives will be useless unless you want to juggle adapters and dongles.

This is the third WD My Passport external hard drive Ive purchased over the last two years. I use them, along with both free and subscribed CrashPlan accounts, to back up the data on a variety of laptop and desktop PCs. The WD drives serve this purpose well; theyre incredibly easy to set up and use as either dedicated or multi-system drives, and -- like the internal WD drives Ive used over way more years than I care to admit to -- they run and run and run. Buy a good carrying case (I like the semi-hard cases; more room inside for the cable) and youre good to go for extended road trips with your laptop. WD also provides backup software with these drives, but I havent tried it.

It’s always plugged into my ps4 as active storage...BEWARE: data can become corrupt if you don’t use appropriate surge protection! So far my ps4 has recovered data every time when it wasn’t plugged in to surge protector.

I do love this product BUT... and I almost thought about giving it four stars or less because of this...YOU HAVE TO FORMAT IT for a Mac. It wouldnt work and even when I followed the instructions, it still wasnt responsive. I thankfully found the packaging it came in, called WD hotline for help and they walked me through my computer settings to format it for proper use. It has been backing everything up beautifully since then. So, if youre like me and have very little computer knowledge, KEEP the packaging and call the hotline to help set it up.

Using this as an external drive for my Xbox One. This will be the 3rd hard drive had purchased for my Xbox, not because of bad drives, but because of Xbox games being so large. The drive seems to be faster than the other two I had for the system. Very solid case, I love how it matches teh Xbox one two tone design as well.

Excellent disk. Compact, light and fast. I bought it to backup my Mac with Time Machine. At first I was unable to format it on MAC although I am not a novice user, so I come to think that the product was defective. I contacted WDs technical support and in a few minutes they helped me solve the problem. Now it works perfect. 100% MAC-compatible

This holds a lot of my photos. Im disappointed since the transfer rate is only about 15 MB per second. Larger video files go a lot quicker reaching 50 MB/sec.

The My Passport drive is a near useless device for me. The software accompanying the device cant detect itself as an external drive, so I am unable to set up any kind of a backup plan and I cannot set up password protection. I contacted Amazon tech support and they were unable to solve the problem. I also contacted Western Digital online, and their suggestions also failed to solve the problem. In their last email to me, they stated, We are working hard on compatibility with Windows 10. Windows 10 was released in 2015. You would think that Western Digital would have solved compatibility problems by now. Even though it is very cumbersome, Ive tried dragging and dropping my files to My Passport. Ive only been successful once. Every other time I attempt to drag and drop, it will only establish a link back to the file on my computers hard drive. Dont waste your money. Buy something else.

Id recommend 2 TB if youre getting this for PS4. So far, I have 25 games on mine (with games ranging from 1 gig such as Minecraft to 62+ such as GTA) with 1.2 tb still available. Anything more is overkill in my opinion.

The My Passport Ultra is trusted, portable storage in a design that brilliantly pairs metal and matte finishes to create a sophisticated style. It has plenty of space to store all the content you love. Social media and cloud storage import, WD Backup software and password protection help keep all your memories safe and secure. Easy to use, just plug it in to start saving and backing up.
