These new tabbed filters definitely change your flow rate. I ground a batch of coffee 32 grams and compared the old (untabbed) filters to the new (tabbed) filters. Using 16 grams for each cup the new filters extracted for 24 seconds longer than the old! I think I can adjust the grind to compensate a little bit, but just buy the old style and leave your recipe as is.

There are several different kinds of Hario V60 filters floating around out there, and Amazon doesnt make it clear which of these reviews is referring to which kind. This review is specifically for the 100-count boxed version of the Hario V60 untabbed natural (unbleached) filters - see photos. All the boxed versions of the filters are made in Japan by the original factory that has been producing Hario filters for years. They are available in both natural (unbleached) versions in boxes of 100 and white (bleached) versions in boxes of 40. Personally, I cant detect a difference in brewing time or taste between the white untabbed filters and the natural untabbed filters. There is no discernable paper taste imparted to the coffee with either of these filters (especially if you pre-rinse the filter with hot water before adding your ground coffee and brewing, which you should), and the dripdown/brew time is consistent with my previous experience with the V60 brewing method. The white untabbed filters, however, cost substantially more than the natural ones - and come in a much smaller box. So if youre looking to save a few bucks, the natural untabbed filters in the 100-count box are the way to go As for the other types of filters on here: The tabbed filters that come in the 100-count bags are also made in Japan, but come from a different manufacturer than the untabbed filters. They are very slightly thicker than the boxed ones, but only add a slight increase to brew times. I prefer the untabbed/boxed version for storage purposes, but the bagged versions are slightly cheaper, especially in quantity. Otherwise theres not much of a noticable difference between the boxed (untabbed) filters and the bagged (tabbed) filters, at least to me. To make things even more complicated: there is a third version of the filters made in the Netherlands, which are not only tabbed but also embossed with a V60 logo. They are apparently the thickest of all and increase brew times substantially. I dont think Amazon sells these directly but they may be available from third party vendors, so keep an eye out. You can also search online for several discussions and videos about the differences between the filters and peoples experiences with them. Happy brewing!

The ones I received were the old style which draw / drain better and dont have the tabs. If you do receive the newer style, 1) there will be a tab 2) theres possibly a coating and tighter flocking/weave. It seems the new style is more susceptible to stalling so possibly reducing fines could be advantageous, more generally with the newer style youll need to grind coarser. Generally, with the old style non-tab I get juicier V60s across the board, all types, and can grind finer. YMMV. Edit update: Nov. 2018. Received two more newer style with tabs (3rd version?). They drain much closer to the original (non tabbed V60 filters). James Hoffman has a video on y-tube that shows the 3 versions of this filter. The oldest non tabbed still appear to the drain the fastest (thinnest, most pourous) but this newest batch of tabbed have been totally acceptable and well within the range of what one would expect for pourover. You can buy 03 size still that do not have tabs, I believe in the old paper type.

Don’t know why anyone would give this other than a 5star
