I had my LG blu ray player installed in enclosure and playing a movie in 10 minutes on my windows 10 desktop. The included power supply electrical plug came in 2 pieces and it took me a couple of minutes to figure out how to slide the plug top piece onto the base. I am visually handicapped so I do a lot of things by feel so not gentle when putting stuff together. I found no aspects of the enclosure flimsy, and my enclosure was not dented when I received it or dented when I finished the install. I tested several of my usb 3 ports with this device after reading about issues others encountered and they worked fine and were at super speed. I had no issues with the length of the usb cord. I have an NZXT matx case and can either have it on top of my case or beside it. You should measure the distance from the usb 3 ports on your pc case to the spot you plan to place the enclosure. If it is longer than 24 inches then you will need a usb 3 extension cable. The usb cord provided is thick and well made. I installed an LG Blu Ray writer which is 7 inches long. There is a piece of the circuit board that is not quite 7 inches deep on left side of enclosure. My drive sticks out of front of enclosure about a 16th of an inch. I was able to screw the outer and inner shells together with the small miss-alignment. If your 7 inch drive has a solid flat surface on left side you will have same issue, so if you want a flush appearance this enclosure will not work for you. I will be watching a lot of movies in the next couple of weeks and will amend this review if any viewing, overheating, or other issues arise. Update: 12/13/2019 The documentation that arrived with my enclosure states that drive being installed be no longer that 6.77 inches. No issues with overheating yet.

Ive only had this for a few days, but I know what works and what doesnt so far. The Maxell DVD-R does not record. I got this message for three different discs: MEDIUM ERROR, 0x0C, and WRITE ERROR. No problems with the Verbatim DVD+R and DVD-R discs.

I have been happy with everything Ive purchased from OWC, and this is no exception. This is a really nice burner. The enclosure is heavy and built like a tank, which helps to minimize vibration. You can definitely hear the disc spinning, but that’s true of all optical drives I’ve ever used (going all the way back to my external APC SCSI CD-ROM drive in 1994). There is a power switch on the back of the drive, allowing you to power it on only when you need it. This does not switch off the power brick, which will continue to consume a small amount of electricity, even with the drive switched off. The drive came with two blank BD-R discs in DVD cases. It also came with a link to download two pieces of software: DiscLabel from Smile Software (for creating, printing, and sharing CD and DVD labels, jewel case inserts, and DVD covers) and Data Backup 3 from Prosoft Engineering (utility that allows you to backup, restore, and synchronize your data). I have not yet downloaded or tried either piece of software. I’m using this burner with a 2013 iMac running macOS Sierra and Apple’s built-in software for burning data discs. I have burned 20 Verbatim M DISC BD-R discs (single layer 25 GB capacity) with one failed burn (verification failure). The successful burns were done with minimal software running (Activity Monitor and Finder only). The failed burn was done with additional software running (Firefox with lots of tabs and windows open). I suspect that the failed burn was due to the additional system load from running Firefox. Ensure that you have minimal software running, and you should get reliable results. This can be a bit annoying, especially if you have many discs to burn, but it’s more of an issue with the computer keeping the data flowing to the drive than an issue with the drive itself. I have not yet tried burning any DVDs or multi-layer BD-R discs. Pros: Solid build, reliable performance, burns M DISC BD-R discs, includes some software for macOS and Windows, product description on Amazon is accurate Cons: Reliable burns require minimal software running on computer, physically much larger than Apple USB SuperDrive (which only handles CDs and DVDs), does not include software for burning DVD or Blu-ray video discs

Not a techie. Just needed an enclosure for a blu-ray drive in a gaming computer pc that hasnt an optical drive in sight. Dont review as often as I once did but I did want to give this product its kudos. It is solidly constructed & easily contains (with minimal installation) your drive. No vibration...no annoying sounds...easy open...easy close. It reminds me of products from years ago where they took the time to do it right. When they took a little pride in their workmanship. Cannot over state the fact that this is a product with which you will be very pleased. I consider it the best optical drive enclosure on the market period. She who must be obeyed just commented yesterday on its heft when she was dusting around my computer desk (which I have told her not to do because of static electricity - Some of those modern dust mops are static factories that Tesla could have used to light up Colorado Springs - but thats another story) The point is even she noticed its solid build enough to say something. Highly recommended!!

Very happy with the build quality. Its built like a tank and is easy to install/setup. I did have a problem with it continually dropping the connection to my Windows 11 laptop. After some fooling around, I discovered the issue stemmed from it being connected to my USB hub. When I bypassed the hub and went direct to my PC, the problem disappeared. My drive is a Sony Optiarc BD-500s. So other than that one headache, Im very happy with the unit. Overpriced IMHO, but it does the job.

Really like the design and has a nice weight to it Pros -Fairly easy to put together -Has a great aesthetic to it Cons -The Plug for it is one of those where you can remove the prongs so you can use a different type of plug if needed so you need to make sure the power and the Plug head are both included. -The included USB 3.0 Cable is incredibly short. So make sure to buy a longer cable if you decide to purchase this.

I am thoroughly impressed with this excellent enclosure for my LG WH14NS40 Blu-ray drive. The parts are engineered to extremely close tolerances. The exterior has a sleek, brushed aluminum finish that looks great on my desktop. The rubber feet on the bottom ensures that it will not slide around on smooth surfaces. The only odd thing was that the directions supplied were for a different enclosure. Nevertheless, the enclosure is so easy to assemble you can intuitively figure out how it goes together.

I don’t know if this is the best external optical drive enclosure on the market, but it is really good. It is made of aluminum with no plastic facades unlike one of its competitors (the Vantec). Also unlike the Vantec, it is dead quiet with no noisy fan, so I can leave it on 24/7. I’ve only had it for a couple of days though, so I don’t know how the lack of a fan might affect the drive’s longevity, but my educated guess is that heat won’t be a problem at all. This enclosure is also a bit smaller than the Vantec. As you may have guessed, I have owned this OWC enclosure and the Vantec, and by far, I prefer this one. Buy with confidence.

OWC Mercury Pro Bluray Read / Write There is not much to say, except this is a high quality device. I have a Dell OptiPlex desktop computer. Just simply plugged the Bluray re-writer into a good USB port, plug the power pack into a 120volt outlet, flip the power switch on and youre ready to go. Has a high quality brushed metal case with an easy to load disc tray. Good work guys! I would buy it again. I wish all devices work well as this does!

No semaphore time out error with ImgBurn on this enclosure and the Dell XPS 8930 PC. Im reserving my full judgement until after some more extensive use. I gave a good recommendation to my last enclosure, but after a little while, it started dropping communication with the device. Ive only burned 1 Ritek 8x DVD+RW in the Pioneer BDR-209M so far, but its performed well on it. However, it was later revealed on the other enclosure that this same media that caused no problems initially was causing the device to drop communication. So, Ill have to use this enclosure more to see if my opinion changes. EDIT 1: 2018-07-16 - There is one con I can mention. The included USB cable, while it is USB 3.1, is too short for any practical use. Youll need a separate longer cable or an extension cable, like I attached. EDIT 2: 2018-08-25 - Now that Ive had some time to put this enclosure through some paces, I have a better point of view on its performance. My rating remains the same. The only downside Ive really come across with it is sometimes when I power on the unit, particularly if Ive restarted Windows, Windows 10 doesnt recognize the Pioneer BD-2209 as being attached. If I power off the unit and try again, it shows up in File Explorer. This may not be a problem with the enclosure, but Windows or a particular configuration with my PC. I dont know for sure. I cant determine if its a limitation of the 2209 or the enclosure, but if the 2209 fails to Verify a Ritek 8x DVD+RW at any point other than the first 32 sectors, the drive drops communication with Windows. The Verify rate falls to 0.0x in ImgBurn and never resumes, ever. The only thing to do is power off the enclosure so ImgBurn can cancel. Powering it back on, though, resumes communication with the drive. All in all, Im still pretty pleased with this enclosure, despite some odd hiccups here and there. EDIT: 2018-08-28 - And, just a few days after my last update, Ive pretty much taken back everything I said positive about this drive. Its power supply just up and stopped working. No matter where its plugged into, the green light on the adapter doesnt light up anymore. So, the enclosure doesnt receive power to send to the drive. Effectively, it no longer works. This seemed promising, yet appears to be cheaply constructed. EDIT: 2018-08-30 - I do have to admit, Other World Computing does apparently provide excellent customer service. I began the process for returns/refund and they said since it seems to just be the power supply failing, theyd send me a replacement one. Sure beats my having to send back the entire product just for a failed power adapter. I may have to re-evaluate my number of stars again back up. EDIT: 2018-09-05 - I updated my rating to 3 stars because of the excellent customer service I got from Other World Computing. They did send me a replacement power supply free of charge and it worked. Ive also determined a few other things I was uncertain about this enclosure. I put the 2209 Pioneer BD drive in a different enclosure from another manufacturer and when a write failed to Verify on a DVD+RW, that enclosure also dropped communication with the drive. So, its not a quirk of this enclosure but of the 2209 Pioneer BD internal drive used in any enclosure.
