This will now be the third Western Digital Passport hard drive that I have purchased. I work a lot with photo and video, so I am always in need of more hard drive space. I have had a very positive experience with their products. None of the Passports I have purchased have had any issues whatsoever. That being said, I back-up my back-ups, so in case one of these were to fail I wouldnt lose anything. But by and large I feel confident that this hard drive will hold up well over time. USB 3.0 transfers files quickly and the compact size makes it easy to throw in a backpack. I wouldnt transport one of these without some kind of protective case. However, Amazon Basics makes a great case for $5 that is sturdy and very useful. I have purchased one for each of my Passport hard drives.

I have used Western Digital products for several decades. Generally speaking, they are reliable (absolutely essential for this application) and fulfill my requirements perfectly. Most human beings, but especially Americans, are hoarders, whether they will admit it or not. In the case of storage devices for computers, software, movies, photographs, and files we seem to never have enough available storage capacity available. This product should provide a permanent solution for most of us, but only a temporary solution for others. In my situation I have a 16 TB Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that required a firmware upgrade that would delete all of the existing files. This product was purchased to provide a pre-upgrade storage location for my important files. After the upgrade was completed I planned to move all of my files back on to the NAS device. This strategy and plan worked perfectly for me. Now that the upgrade has been completed, I am continuing to use this product as a secondary or tertiary storage device for my tax practice. Almost all of my tax return documents and files cannot be replaced. I recommend that you read the User Manual for this product before you install it, and also use the WD Utility software that is included. I do not use all of the utility and functionality features and functions. I believe that the utility can be used to shut this product down before it is moved. This external storage drive is portable, but should not be moved while power is on and the device has not been properly shut down.

I signed up for Carbonite backup and chose an option to mirror my hard drive so when it crashed again (I went through it once, it is a piece of hard ware and probably will fail again) I wanted to be able to reinstall the entire contents of my hard drive rather than TRY to remember what I had on it and not have to spend 3 weeks trying to rebuild it. One of the things I had to have to do the mirroring was a portable hard drive. I spent a lot of time trying to find something that I could use, a friend recommended this drive, I bought it and it works just fine. I does act a little weird though but I unplug it and it goes back to normal again.

Everything seems to be working out great with this drive. Ive only had it for two days though. I bought this drive for my Xbox One. It was recognized right away and started moving and installing my own game library. It does get slightly hot when it is running that doesnt seem to affect it. The drive greatly improves the performance of games and beats the internal drive right out the park! Black Ops 3 was horrible when it was installed on the internal but now it plays way smoother. NOTE: I am an Xbox preview member, so game performance is affected by the preview updates. Overall, the drive is excellent. Will update as the drive is tested longer. I am also running a Seagate Expansion 1TB portable drive for more storage. It was a gift for Christmas. There doesnt seem to be a noticeable difference between the WD 2TB but Western Digital seems to be more reliable than Seagates line of portable hard drives from multiple site reviews. This is debatable.

I have this WD 2TB Black hooked up to an XBox One, and have transferred all of my games to it from the Ones internal storage. I have noticed ZERO slowdown in the speed at which games load and play. If anything, it may be a bit faster... but that could be the placebo effect talking. The only complaint I have is that it has a blue light that blinks constantly, even when the One is in rest mode. I dont know if that means the One is accessing it every so often (maybe the One is a restless sleeper?) or if that is some characteristic of the drive itself. Either way, if it really annoyed me, I probably would have turned it sideways or put a piece of electrical tape over the light by now. Installed in December and have had no issues so far. Solid product.

I bought this 4 months ago as a back up drive because my iOmega drive is finally starting to fail after 5 years. This drive worked really well when I initially transferred about 150-200 gb of files to it the first day. After less than 10 uses, it can have trouble registering on any computer. When I plug it in, the drive whirrs and the light illuminates, but the computers simply dont see it. I end up unplugging and reinserting over and over until the computers are finally able to read it. Other days, it works fine and on the first try. And Im back on Amazon trying to find another drive that might be more reliable because its erratic functioning makes me worried that it will crash sooner than later. *UPDATE* After the first few weeks, it has been working much more consistently. Im still dont quite trust this drive after our rocky beginning, but its performance has been much improved over the last few months.

I always reformat these into Apple journaled format and I setup 2 partitions. One partition is just a little bigger than my system drive on my laptop.... on this laptop it was 256Gb SSD. That leaves another 1.7 Tb partition for external storage. These Passport Ultra Drives are super fast at USB 3 and work well with Apple laptops when completely erased and reformatted. Im sure they work fine as they come, which is HFS+. I dont like any of the software WD includes, its just my personal taste, and what I want the drive to do. I set up the Backup partition to be my TImeMachine drive, and then my laptop is always backing up to this drive. I like that, because if I disconnect the drive, the autobackup on Timemachine is set to only backup if the drive is connected. That way, if I dont want to lose CPU bandwidth because of hourly backups, and I dont want to have to remember to tell the backup drive to STOP backing up, I can just attach the drive when Im not active on any laptop, and leave the laptop plugged in. We have around 4 or 5 laptops setup like this at our house (Kids,Wife,Husband, etc ) - all work flawlessly.

First off, theres really nothing wrong with the drive and its worked great for 7 years. Now I am having issues with corrupted files and trying to recover / fix the drive now is near impossible as it may be completely failing on me now. This is a sad because its been solid for very long and if I have to, I will have to reformat almost 500gb of backup data, which will be completely lost. Thank god its nothing too important though!

This is a great device to have especially if youre upgrading to a new Windows or new computer. This will store and back up all of your computer valuables that you may not want to loose. You can drag and drop things into this drive, and you can also set it up where it will automatically back your stuff up. One thing I ran into when installing the apps that came with it was when it offered to update it would end up never finishing. So what I did was tell it to update later and finish installing the apps. After the apps are installed and you attempt to open one it will it will ask again, and at this time the updates should work. Overall, great product, I havent had any issues with it yet.
