I helped a friend set up a new computer and again when she acquired a malware infection. She had one of these little Passport drives. I liked it so much, got one of my own. White version, 1TB. Ive been using it about 8 months now, still love it. For me, it has a whole bunch of pluses: Western Digital has always been my choice for external backup hard drives. Good rep. 1TB is more than I need to backup my tons of photos, recipes, email, tax returns, and other important records on my laptop PC. The small physical size is a HUGE plus. It has 4 very tiny rubbery feet which help it stay put. Uses only ONE cord - USB. It does NOT require an electric outlet. Yaaaa. I used to use one of the standard large external drives, also WD, but it took up too much precious space, got knocked over a lot, and required an electric outlet, which are in short supply in my computer area. (Landline phone, modem, router, tv, printer, smartphone charger, charging laptop etc.) I plugged it into a USB port and let it sit on my 17 laptop - lower left corner. Thats it. Fits perfectly and so small it doesnt interfere with using the keyboard. This works for me because I dont have a desk. I move the laptop from the table next to my chair to my lap frequently. After all, it is a LAPtop, not a desktop or table top PC. <grin> My Passport moves with my laptop. I have a 17 monitor/keyboard area, so there is room for it. Not sure if it would fit in the same spot with a smaller laptop. If you use your laptop at a desk, or just plug in the Passport once a day to do backup, not a problem. I just prefer keeping it connected all the time. I prefer a mouse over the touch pad, but this is small enough that keeping it on the left side of my laptop does not cover the touch pad, should I need to use it. I use a third party software which checks for changes hourly and backs up any I made. So far, have not needed to use it for restore purposes, but sooner or later, hard drives fail. I have no doubt it will save the day when that happens. However, even external hard drives fail, so to be safe, I also have a cloud backup just in case. Cant be too careful.

WD Released these updated versions of the Ultras 500GB, 1TB , 2TB, and a new 3TB. (For the 2TB The old version was Model # WDBMWV0020BBK-NESN and new version is Model # WDBBKD0020BBK-NESN) I researched if there are any differences, so here is what I came up with... Pros Overall Size of new model is a tiny bit smaller ( see picture for comparison of dimensions on each new model vs old model ) Higher Capacity Available - Now Up to 3TB vs the older model only up to 2TB capacity Optional 256-bit AES hardware encryption Now available in white Same as Old Model Nothing Changed Weight is the same exact at 0.50 lbs ( 0.23 kg ) Automatic local and cloud backup Comes in 4 colors ( they still offer black, and blue, red became berry and they replaced titanium for white on the newer models) USB 3.0 connectivity Formatted for Windows, reformatting required for Mac 3-year limited warranty Same Data transfer rate and Operating temperature USB 3.0 up to 5 Gb/s (max) / USB 2.0 up to 480 Mb/s (max) Operating temperature: 5°C to 35°C / Non-op. temperature: –20°C to 65°C Cons None so far ..... Bottom Line - They are pretty similar so get what is cheaper, unless you need/buy the 3TB they never had one before

Purchased this as an alternative to a very bulky 1TB backup drive for my Macbook Pro. As a photographer, photos and videos amass on my computer at an alarming speed. And because of the high quality nature of the files, I know its time to do a clean out when my whole system starts to slow down. The problem was, having to set up an external drive with an independent power source was just annoying. This little gem has twice the storage and is about a quarter of the size of my other drive. I keep it within reach of my bed, where I do 99% of my editing. Whenever I need to dump files, or pull files, my passport drive is so convenient and FAST. RAW files and high definition video files have no problems jumping ship from my mac to the passport in a very timely fashion. Ultra Portable really does mean ultra portable for this little black book. If I know Ill be shooting a lot of footage that Ill need to dump later, or I may need to retrieve old photos for editing, chucking my passport into my backpack or camera case is so convenient. Also, not having to find yet another plug to power it with while my phone, computer, and spare camera battery are charging is a relief. I dont have to worry about knocking it over, sucking up dust, or tripping over wires. Awesome little product. No cons! Buy it!

Good: The bundled software offers a great amount of customization, security, and stability options, though it has its downfalls. The USB 3.0 is fast, and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0. It is small enough that it fits in my blazer pocket. Stylish design. Bad: The backup software wont allow me to select and de-select only the folders I want to back up; as a result, Windows 7 Backup and Recovery is vastly superior. The included USB 3.0 cable is way too short. The activity light is where the USB port is, so it is difficult to keep it facing me. Its a great value for the price and is well worth the purchase. The software has its ups and downs, but, all in all, it adds to the value.

I had the worst day when I bought this, I wasnt expecting Western Digital to neglect Apple computers this much. Heres what happen, upon the un-boxing and hook it up right away, I find out that it is not Mac enable at the start. I bought 3 Externals back in 2009, and Had no problem, just plug and go, on my Xbox 360, PS3, Mac, and PC. I decided to update once the TBs drop in price, and I saw this one in a good deal. I pour through the instructions for about 20 mins, until I decide to go there web site. The Web site gives me nothing on why my Mac 2011(Summer) would not read the device. Then I search google, I come across Mac World Magazine forums. Where they sent me on a round about click session to reformat the device. In addition, to not once but twice having to reformat it for Mac and PC, because it would not work on my PS4 the first time. After a 3 hour process, I can say, I may shop other external SSD/HDDs, What really makes me upset, is the Security system; by that, I mean, once a day when I turn my computer on in the morning it takes an extra minute to wake it self up because the security program locks up the whole process; asks for a password every time, even though I set it to remember my computer. What is more of an hassle is when my computer goes to sleep, I just eject it and leave it unplug most of the time until I really need it because it will say it can be open but I have to reconnect the whole device upon reawakening my computer. After that Minute wait to activate and use; it works like a great hard drive.

In early February 2016 I purchased the WD 2TB Black My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBBKD0020BBK-NESN [Old Model]. I was very inexperienced with External Hard Drives, as well as the WD brand and programming. Fortunately, both Hard Drive and WD programming are extremely user friendly. Step by Step instructions, Security features including Password Protection (protects Hard Drive from being accessed entirely, unless the correct password is entered.), Ultra lightweight!!!, and super quiet (so extremely quiet, on some occasions I wasnt sure the device was even running, It was every time!)... EXTREMELY, WHOLEHEARTEDLY, and OVERLY SATISFIED WITH THIS PURCHASE/PRODUCT and well as with WD (Western Digital) its self!!! Well done Western Digital company lol.... My one and only issue, which by no means is faulted by WD, would be I no longer have the Portable Hard Drive. About 2 months ago, my house was broken into and burglarized, the thief or thieves took every single piece of technology they could find, including this Portable Hard Drive (although, they did NOT think to take its unique cord along too).... as well Im hoping whom every has it now isnt able to break through the security programming and has a useless component! .... ... I have emailed amazon to see if there is anything they could help or inform me of, ANYTHING could help; as well as contacted WD through their website, hoping there is some bit of information they could enlighten, maybe even brighten my outlook.... I am a very highly satisfied customer of WD and Amazon, and currently researching my next WD Portable Hard Drive with full intentions of purchasing another WD brand product, when the time is right that is.....

Im a faithful Western Digital consumer. I have purchased this brand to replace internal desktop HDs, the My Book line for archiving and game console storage, and now this handy little unit for my new laptop. It is extremely light and quick. Unfortunately Im not techie enough to give speed ratings and such... only that the unit is fast and quiet. I am happy that the weight is light as I tote this in my laptop bag or purse daily. It weighs less than my portable trackball mouse, so thats helpful. I did purchase the OEM bumper protection accessory too when does help to grip this unit. Its smooth plastic body can be a challenge to hold on to. I highly recommend getting this accessory. All in all this is a great unit for a reasonable price. Not much higher in price on Amazon compared to other sites. The purchase experience, tracking, and easy returns is why I prefer shopping on Amazon.

I am not a super picky tech pro but i have had this device for several years and still works just fine so that counts as great in my book. Disk drives are either 5 stars from me if they last for a long time or 1 star if they break and loose my data, is very clear cut for me, one or the other because i simply need them to store my data safely and dont care about nitpicking other techie details about performance. Ive been using it everyday just plugged as an extra storage space for my desktop so i havent been traveling with it, have never dropped it or hit it, it always sits on the same safe spot but i download and open stuff from it every day so ive used it constantly for quite a long time now and it still working dandy so i would not ask for more.

When I first got this drive, it was an absolute lifesaver. I was able to save all my important documents, photos, videos, etc. from the last 10 years in one place and thought all my storage worries were over. At the time, I had very recently lost an extremely close person in my life and all the photos, videos, etc. that I and her family had of her were on this device, including all things pertaining to her funeral. All my financial and tax documents were on this device. There were an abundance of legal documents pertaining to a law suit I had filed saved on this device. And I was able to store other client information/documents so I could have their files easily accessible in case anything came up while I was not at the office, considering I am on call quite often. Before and after purchasing this particular device, I had done pretty extensive research to ensure I used it properly at all times and always followed all the recommendations and suggestions of Western Digital and others on WDs official forums. I even purchased a hard top, waterproof case to store the drive in, just for the added security because of the importance of the files on the drive. Literally not even an entire TWO MONTHS into owning this device, the problems began. One day I got to work and went to open an important financial document, but it said the file could not be found because it had either been moved or deleted. I knew for a fact that not one file had been moved or deleted, so I started trying to open files throughout different folders saved on the device. Everything but TWO files were unable to be accessed due to being moved or deleted. I was hopeful that maybe it was just a fluke, so I ejected the device and left it alone. Two days later, I tried using the device again, but this time my computer would not even recognize the device at all, no matter which way I tried to search for it. The light indicating it is on and plugged in was on and you could hear the device running, but the computer could not find it. I rapidly started searching through all of WDs official forums and at their suggestions, I tried using multiple different cables to connect the device and each time it was still unrecognizable. Ive also tried it on over 10 different computers and laptops and it is always unable to be found, yet the light still indicates it is on and you can hear it running each time. Im still within my warranty period, but I am absolutely livid that so many sentimental and highly important/confidential files have been lost. I purchased this drive to prevent losing these files because of their importance, and the EXACT thing I was looking to avoid, happened. When I purchased this drive, there were countless positive reviews and people raved about this drive. Now that some time has passed and Ive lost these files, Ive since gone through the reviews again to find there are now many people changing their reviews, claiming to have experienced the same thing. There are even threads on other websites saying theyve experienced the same issues and have expressed their disgust with the way Western Digital has handled the issues. I hope this review can save at least one person from having to deal with the same issues the majority of us buyers have experienced. I absolutely do not recommend this product and will probably never recommend another Western Digital product to anyone; not only because of the product failure, but mainly due to the way Western Digital handles their failures and and show that they simply do not care about their customers.
