These lights are a little pricier than your typical Wally World flashlights. But your getting what you pay for. This is our 2nd 2-D LED Maglight we bought, they can take a beating and they have a VERY bright white light. I keep a 2-D LED in the saddle bags of the motorcycle, another 2-D LED in the trunk of the car, and a 3-D LED that stays in the house. I figured that if Im getting a flashlight to have in an emergency, then get one worth having. I think these are the lights used by police officers if Im not mistaken. As another reviewer said, with LED the batteries will go bad from leaking (expiring) before they are used up, so check them once or twice a year for any corrosion. I know every few years I replace the standard AA Maglight batteries regardless of use. I hate the idea of it dimming out on me in an emergency.

It’s a Maglite. It’s awesome. It’s heavy. It’s durable. It’s bright. What else do I need to say? If you crack it or break it , your an animal. And if you do break it, it’s guaranteed against pretty much everything but battery leakage.

Works perfectly! Very good feel and heft to this light - I use it walking the dog late at night and it lights the path perfectly. Very strong beam that can be controlled easily by twisting the lens Battery usage is not bad - the only complaint is that this takes three D batteries and not two our four. So you usually end up with a spare battery laying around in a drawer. Battery life is great.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me! I just finished throwing away my second MagLite ST3D016 3-D Cell Flashlight and now Im writing this review. I bought my first flashlight back in 2010 because I wanted something for walking on the beach at night. The MagLite was very bright, shines a great distance, and I also thought it would be for good self-defense if needed. I had no problems till my batteries needed to be replaced. I couldnt get them out! The batteries leaked acid and became welded to the inside. Because it was such a tight fit theres no way I could get them out. But I did love my MagLite so I bought an identical one. So now its been over a year with the new one and I see my light begin to dim so Im thinking I better change the batteries before they do the same thing. Too late! I couldnt even get the cap off. Not with any tool known to mankind. I go to the MagLite FAQ web page and someone else is asking what it means when they cant get the cap off and the answer is that the batteries have leaked and the cap is never coming off. MagLite says to contact the battery company since its a battery issue. Good luck with that. Ive learned my lesson. I love MagLites, but they are way too expensive to be a disposable flashlight. Youve been warned. If you buy one of these flashlights change the batteries every six months to be safe. I wont be buying another.

Appears well made. Very sturdy. Light is bright and focused. Only complaint about Mag Lites is that if it should break they are rarely fixable by customer.

Please be wary of which Maglite you think you have. Going off of NLee the Engineers review and his images posted with this product listing, I was under the assumption that I got the old version of this flashlight when I actually have the newest version. Im posting this comment in October of 2011, so his review is 1 year old now, and I believe (if I read correctly elsewhere), Maglite now has 3 different generations of the 3D LED flashlight. Look at the LED of your flashlight (not the packaging, it can be misleading) by looking down through the glass of the flashlight. If you see a green square with yellow in the middle, with the number 484 off to the side, you have the 3rd generation Maglite 3d LED flashlight. This means that the Luxeon Rebel ES 3W LED 2nd generation (the one in NLee the Engineers image) is now outdated. Whether or not the 2nd generation is actually much inferior to the 3rd generation I do not know. Nothing against NLee the Engineer. I just wanted to make sure people were informed. I dont claim to be an expert in the area. I just got my information by reading this flashlight nerd :-) forum thread (all the posts there are newer than NLees review): [...] Can anyone else verify this?

Maglite LED 3-Cell D Flashlight, Black

Amazon.com

Like many other manufacturers, Mag Instrument has expanded its line of flashlights to include models featuring LED-type bulbs. Why? LEDs are virtually unbreakable, and they are far more efficient than incandescent bulbs. As the product name suggests, this Maglite runs on 3 D-type batteries, which will take a while to run out thanks not only to the LEDs but also to Mag Instrument"s "Intelligent Energy Source Management," which balances high brightness against extended battery life. The bright, powerful beam adjusts from spot to flood simply by rotating the head. The case is made from a high-strength aluminum alloy that has been anodized inside and out, which gives you water- and shock-resistance in a lightweight package. High-quality O-rings at both openings keep water away from the batteries. In other words, this energy-efficient flashlight is almost indestructible--a good quality when it comes to the tools. Limited lifetime warranty. Batteries not included.--Josh Dettweiler
