Returning mine today. WD took over a week to send the booster cable, and that didnt work any better. I can only assume the drive is defective, since the USB ports are working with other devices. Dont know if this is an iMac thing or not, but I need this for archiving and cannot consider it reliable. === Just received this drive and could not install it. Turns out that the power required is more than my older iMac puts out. Customer service at WD promptly offered to send a power boost cable (gratis), which apparently is a two-headed USB cable, that is, take up two USB ports on the iMac. Luckily I have two available. Otherwise I would have to get a power USB hub -- or return it and buy an external desktop HD. Just a warning to other users of older computers. The WD site itself mentions some computers may need a booster cable and offers a part number, but doesnt actually sell one as far as I can tell.

My wife loves to take pictures of our sons, this was a great addition as she was running out of room on the computer. In under 3 minutes she has upgraded her memory and backed up her files. The only problem is the cords seem to be a little long and are easy for the subject of her pictures to pull them out of the computer. Get this if you are low on hard drive space and dont feel the need to upgrade to a new computer.

I bought this to store all of my...entertainment on. Im so excited to finally have room for the Butt Brothers collectons and the hole series of Backdoor Magic!! I have three other 1TB hard drives and they are jam packed with...ah hell I cant hide it, MAN ON MAN HOT SWEATY LOVE TIME!! This new hard drive should last me for at least another month of material. Ill probably go with the 10 TB size next time...oh well.

I plugged it into the MAC and it instantly recognized it and set it up for the back-up information. I am still learning about the MAC, so Im not sure the drive is doing what it is supposed to to in conjunction with Macs directions. It does show data and dates logged. When I have to recover something, Ill know how great it is.

I bought this drive to facilitate a large file dump from my Mac to my clients PC and it met my expectations. The drive itself is compact and slick looking. It would fit easily into a ladies purse or a small pocket on the front of a laptop bag or backpack. It comes pre-formatted for a Mac but you can access the files housed here from a Mac, PC or Chromebook. you just cannot save files onto the drive unless youre using a Mac or have reformatted it for PC (which would erase all contents). This was perfect for what I needed to do. I also like the fact that this didnt come in an oversized box with a lot of empty space, so I could pop the whole thing in the original packaging into a bubble mailer envelope to ship it down to my client in Texas. I have several WD drives and have found them to be more reliable than other brands. Its becoming my go-to brand for external hard drives.

I purchased this because it was recommended by the person who sold me my MacBook. It is incredibly easy to use, has more storage space than I will ever need, backs up my data quickly, and is quite small and unobtrusive. I had been using this for awhile when my hard drive failed. I am a PhD student, so losing my data would have been a disaster. All of my work was saved, and it was easily transferred from My Passport to my new hard drive. I am so thankful I bought this. It was worth every penny!

After much research, the price was the reason I bought this product. Very easy to use. You can store a ton of data. One downside, I wish there was a holder or something to store the hard drive in. I ended up keeping it in the plastic container it came in when not in use.

This review is for a Day 1/out-of-the-box/plug-and-play impression only. Unlike the Seagate external HD I tried and returned before ordering this one (see my review here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R20HU3S9QRGJZI/ref=cm_cr_getr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00HFRWWDY), this external HD worked immediately and pretty much without a hitch. I say pretty much because I had to spend a little time figuring out how to resolve an error message I kept getting when trying to move my Dropbox folder to the external HD. It involved changing the external HDs Sharing & Permissions settings, which was easy to do (see photo). Also had to format it to be case-sensitive, but thats not uncommon - and also easy to do. Heres hoping things continue going smoothly.

I had a 500 GB WD Passport since 2011 and went with a new 1 TB WD Passport Drive when I bought a new Mac, because I had never experienced problems with the old WD Passport Drive. This new one gave me headaches from the moment I installed it because it now comes with a security program and software that clashes with what is on the Mac, at least with El Capitan 10.11. There is no uninstaller software and when/if you just drag it to Trash, that is not enough. And WD hides all the useful information and provides no customer service. I wasted many hours with Mac senior advisers who tried to be as helpful as they could, admitting the problem is with the WD software. I had to wipe the drive clean twice and reinstall, finally without the security features. It appears to work now, but the true test will be after the first backup. (Initially, I got error messages that the backup could not be successfully completed when the security features were enabled.) I would have returned this, but I wasnt sure if all brands have their own security features that might lead to the same issues.

Very nice product. I havent bought a HDD for many years and I am amazed by the small size and capacity. It was easy to use as a backup drive for my Macbook. I wanted to back up thumb drive files on it too but I havent determined that I am able to do that.
