OK - I only gave it a 4-star rating because I just tested it. Multiple use will come later. I like the long (20) cord because it is easier to use on my iMac or PC desktop than a silly 10 +/- cord. It did say to plug in both USB plugs into the computer. Might be inconvenient but not a real problem. First time it was a Amicool DVD burner. It worked but the front plate on the open/close drawer was coming off. I returned it for a refund. Second time was an LG DVD burner. Tried it twice but both burns failed - and they failed differently. I assume it was a mechanical or electrical issue with the burner. I also returned it for a refund. So the third time is a charm! It worked and I hope it works for years to come as my previous Samsung DVD burner did.

I bought this for the exclusive purpose of watching DVDs on my computer. The delivery was on time and the player works perfectly!

Since cases dont have a slot for a dvd player this is easy to use just plug in the usb and works.

Recently bought a new laptop which did not have a built-in DVD drive. Ordered one that died after the first day and had to be sent back. Got this one. It works great! Was able to reinstall Office program and not have to buy a new one.

Although they have been around for years, these external DVD writers have seen a resurgence with the popularity of laptops, ultrabook notebooks and tablets that do not possess built-in DVD drives. Matte black in color with a subtly textured finish (feels like a record album) that does not show fingerprints, the unit has an understated appearance, is a half inch thick, measures almost five and a half inches square and has a plastic housing. According to the included Quick Installation Guide, the DVD writer requires two USB 2.0 A connections in order to provide reliable power. The guide recommends not attempting to use the drive with just one connection, or a USB hub. Against the manufacturer’s recommendation, I tried playback of a DVD with just one USB connected and it played fine, but when I tried to burn a disc using just one USB port, it crashed. I tried this because many of the smaller devices that would utilize this external DVD writer do not have two USB ports, most have one and some have none. If the device being used does have two USB ports on opposite sides, a USB extension cable may solve the issue although this is a less than elegant solution, but it is a solution. The optical drive does not read or burn Blu-ray discs. It comes with a disc that contains backup and disc recording software which can be used if desired but similar software is usually built-in to operating systems or available free online. With my Windows 10 laptop I burned an image from my hard drive to a DVD+R disc in the ASUS external DVD writer and it took eleven minutes and two seconds. Then to compare speed, I burned the same image to the laptop’s internal DVD drive and it took eleven minutes and eight seconds. These are ISO image files that are the same size as a blank DVD (4.7 Gigabytes). This DVD writer also has the capability to burn M discs which are used for archival purposes. To accomplish this the laser beam within the device is five times more powerful than a normal DVD writer. The discs are expensive (around $4 each) and have no additional storage capacity than a normal DVD. I bought a pack of DVDR M discs to test the machine and successfully burned an ISO image onto the disc in 15 minutes and 40 seconds. To test playback of the M disc I put it in a different laptop and the DVD player connected to my TV and it worked fine. I also played two movies (Trainwreck and Ant-Man) using the optical drive and experienced no buffering or interruptions of any kind. Modestly priced and easily transportable, it provides DVD reading and writing capability when needed.

Just built a new computer without an internal CD/DVD drive, so relied on this to transfer some old discs. My use has solely been reading from CDs and DVDs, but in that regard the drive worked flawlessly.

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5 (details of why arent important) and it works just like its supposed to work. Ive loaned it to friends who use new and different laptops and theyve had good results, too. Havent yet used the included Archive DVDs, so no comment on that.

Ive used this for at least 6 months with no problems... Dont use it often though but doesnt make a lot of noise, its lightweight, and it worked for my Dell XPS 15

I purchased this for two reasons. One I wanted to be able to copy information from CDs I have to my Lenovo Yoga and I wanted to be able to copy things to my Samsung phone and potentially use it as a back up for the phone. It worked like a charm with my laptop. I could not get it to work with my phone at all. After the holidays Ill try to full around with it a little more but there really are not a lot of things left to try. If it worked with the phone I would have given it 5 stars.

Bought this as an add-on to my laptop in order to play DVDs. Ive had it for a few months now and am very pleased with it. Its very lightweight, easy to use, and portable so I can pack it in my laptop bag and go. Recommended!
