I changed out the long antenna on my APX 6000 radio. The old one would rub above my vest into my armpit. This keeps the antenna out of my way, and does not affect performance. I can still broadcast/receive the same distance from the repeater that I could before the swap.

The original APX 8000 antenna is fine if you aren’t worried about comfort and a bulky set up. The shorty does have the GPS feature like the long version. The shorty makes it more realistic to wear on a tactical vest. Perfect for a front radio position or on back/shoulder area. If for tactical use, the shorty is a better fit. All comms should be it range if there is an incident, because there will most likely be a mobile comm center at the CP or nearby tactical comm unit.

So I initially purchased this because I was going to move my radio onto my molle vest and wanted a shorter antenna so it wasn’t sticking up so close to my face. You need to pay close attention to this and what it’s capable of. We have a digital system which this works great with. The standard, I’ll call it 8” antenna, that we have is VHF capable. The short stubby antenna is NOT VHF compatible. What this means for us is that while we can talk to our own agency (City police) just fine, but if we have to communicate with our deputies in the county we CANNOT because they run a VHF system. This would mean our portables would not be able to communicate with the county. We don’t communicate with them everyday, in fact it’s extremely rare, but it’s one of those things that the one time you need it you won’t have it because of the stubby antenna. So for the lack of VHF support, that can cause issues and because of that our admin won’t approve these for use. If you don’t have to worry about this then the antenna will work great for you. There is a significant drop in range as would be expected. I have not had the issue of it falling apart as some have. As far as comfort, this thing is great. Going from a 8” antenna to a 3” one is a no brainer for added comfort. Still the above issue regarding VHF is a big one. Not worth the safety/communication loss.

Ive been using this for a few weeks now and havent had any issues. The short length is great if youre mounting your radio on a duty vest. Its also more comfortable if on your belt because it stays out of the way nicely. Radio transmissions are just as clear and crisp as the full size antenna and I havent had any transmiting issues. As for durability I cant say a whole lot since Ive only had it for a short time, but I dont have any doubts that its just as durable as the original full size antenna.

No more getting poked in the armpit or (excuse me) the boob! I was going insane at work with the long antenna, this one is so much better, and I have not had any issues with range etc. Highly recommend, especially for other females that may have similar issues!
