> 3 dayBeen using this for about a year and a half now. First tried soldering with a dinky little pen soldering iron, was terrible, spoiled myself and got this and havent looked back. Ive used it primarily for RC Aircraft wiring, but also done a fair bit of home electronics repair and a bit of surface mount soldering since. The adjustable temp is fantastic. High quality item.

> 3 dayI am no soldering station aficionado but I do have an eye for quality and this product passed the test with flying colors. I wrestled with the decision to invest in a higher end tool versus buying a cheap model since I do not solder all that often and a local electronics store would fix my delicate repairs for free half the time. My old solder gun came from the shack about 35 years ago and wasnt suited for circuit board work but it would get me through most of my basic needs. Enter the Hakko FX888D. What a dream machine this is. It heats up quick, maintains temp, feels great in the hand, and passes my is this a cheap piece of junk test with an A++. As with many tools there is a big difference in the outcome when using a quality piece of equipment versus a cheap knock off. A friend of mine ragged on me for buying this unit while he boasted of the value of his $7 model which supposedly did the same thing. He went on to confess that having a fan on way across the garage was enough to make his iron lose temp so he had to turn it off when soldering! Bottom line, I would buy this again in a heart beat if for some reason I needed to. PS, other reviewers are not exaggerating when they talk of the sturdiness of the gun cradle. You will not be disappointed.

> 3 dayI cant bring myself to study the manual long enough to understand this. Ive glanced at it, but it feels beneath me to have to fully dive into it when all I want to do is change the temperature on a device outfitted with a digital display and buttons. I mash buttons randomly and sometimes get numbers to change, and Im just gonna assume thats changing the temperature. On my friends soldering iron, controlling that is done with a knob and a display. Its so simple. How do you screw that up? The aesthetic guy was so focused on going for that Fisher Price look (on a device that ultimately will only ever sit in a room/location which is exempt from interior design Feng shui critique) that he convinced the other board members to cut down the control inputs from probably 4 buttons and a knob to just 2 buttons. The interface is so devoid of practicality that I envision Mr. Hakko CEOs child, nearly finished pursuing his newfangled Industrial Design bachelors degree, entitled with a textbook-nepotism internship at his old mans company, eager to flex those bold, striking lines and shapes into one of their products. He stares at his drawings for so long that hes lost touch and convinces himself that this is a good look with a real statement, and thanks to his pull up at the top of the chain, the company now produces this. The iron works fine as far as I can tell, but not much better than the cheapo ones Ive used before, though I wont dock points there because the stand is nice. But that interface... Thats where the stars are lost.

Greater than one weekThis Hakko Soldering Station with tips was an excellent purchase for my vintage electronics repair shop. I had an old Weller/Ungar soldering station that was my favorite, until they discontinued it and the tips for it. I tried a new Weller soldering station and it was okay, it had a really long and kludgy soldering iron, that just didnt hold up to the heat and came loose from the handle. The Hakko FX-888D is absolutely fabulous, the control unit takes up much less space, than the Weller. The iron is the right size for me. The cable is long enough to perform various soldering tasks without moving the base. The Hakko heats up extremely fast and has great temperature recovery, even when using a wet sponge. It is very easy to change temperature, once you download the manual from Hakko. The tips are great and are all very useful sizes. The iron with the largest tip on about 750 degrees has no problem flowing solder to chassis grounds. The space worked out so good that I was able to drill partial holes right in front of the Iron on the back of the bench and put the tips there for easy access and to keep them in order from small to large. Overall a fantastic product, I would definitely recommend the FX-888D for the hobbyist to the professional.

> 3 dayNot impressed. May be ok for very small surface mount stuff. Could not tin speaker wires with it even with the biggest tip. Disappointed. Turned it up to 850 degrees. Managed to solder on a bunch of thru hole caps. Using lead free solder.
