Im reviewing the older Tallow based formula and sometimes you can still find it in stock. I have not tried the new formula without tallow (though most reviews say the non-tallow lathers easier and is slicker but not as protective as the tallow base). I grew up in the 50s and the initial reaction to the scent is that it reminds me of grandmas purse. This is a common description that it smells like an old ladys handbag. I dont know exactly what that smell comes from (Jergens lotion or something that grandma would have carried in her purse?). But its not offensive at all. It just doesnt immediately strike you as a manly scent. Fortunately the scent fades quickly as you start to lather - and what a lather! It builds quickly and easily into a thick and creamy protective lather. The scent is not annoying at all on your face or brush while shaving and doesnt linger after the shave. The feel does linger post shave and it is a very good feeling on your face. Skin feels smooth and soft and hydrated for a long time after. Its a classic for a good reason - it really is an exceptionally good shaving soap.

Pleasure to shave with this soap. The scent is subtle and has grown on me since I started with it. I will buy this again.

I did a ton of research before buying this soap as I wanted to get back into a gentlemans shave. This stuff is amazing. Lathers great but not super thick like a true shave cream so it doesnt clog up your blades. The scent is great and the lubrication for your shave is excellent. This will be my go to.

Now this soap shocked me. I am a huge fan of Stirling Soap. Ive used many different kinds over the years and didnt hold out hope that I would like this much. Well, shut my mouth! This soap is incredible. Rich, slick, protective, whips up quickly - it is everything I have wanted and more. Ive been a DE shaver for some 5+ years. I use ATT razors and am very willing to spend on what I want. Tabac, is hard to believe. The price is right. The performance is out of this world. This rose immediately to my #1 position. I think it ties with Stirling for #1. But I can tell you, I would be happy if this soap is all I had. I load my brush for about 30 - 35 seconds. That gives me enough for probably 5 passes. More than I need. If you havent tried this soap, get it now. It is simply THAT good. Seriously, no bull. No one gave this to me, nor gave me a discount, nor anything else. I bought it, and I love it. I will insure I am never without it.

the smell reminds me of Boraxo soap in elementary school. Pretty good soap, but Im liking VDHs Luxury soap for its fantastic smell.

Cant get past the smell enough to even try it!!! Its too powdery, or flowery, or something... Either way, I cant stand it. Which is a shame, since its gotten such rave reviews on Blade and Badger and I really wanted to test it out. I prefer a more dignified scent, like the stuff Truefitt and Hill makes. Now that stuff is quality... shaves nice and smells great. Anyhow, there it sits... on my shelf... that fruity smelling soap named Tabac... getting no love.

Arrived much sooner than expected. 8 days from order to porch. Smells amazing. It has that classic, suave grandpa scent. I love it. Lathers super easy. The awesome scent sticks to your skin.

Very slick, smooth lather and a wonderful smell. Tabac produces abundant lather with little effort. To me, there is no better shaving soap. I acknowledge that it is subjective whether or not a product is good or bad, and some people wont like Tabac. However, to me, every shaver owes it to themselves to try this soap.
