Im not going to write a lot of prose here. If, for whatever reason, you need an 18TB hard drive, a one of these will be your best bet. Even if its not for a NAS system (And my use case wasnt), NAS drives do have increased durability and resistance to problems, and at this size, even if you could possibly recover from losing that much space easily, you dont want to unless you have to.

    Greater than one week

Bought two of these (12TB) as an upgrade from 2x WD 6TB Reds on my Qnap NAS. Only thing I’ve noticed thus far, in the two days they’ve been installed, is that they are VERY LOUD (compared to my old 6TB). Thus, the drop of a star in my review. That said, for anyone who plans on buying these, I don’t recommend installing them in a box that’s near a bedroom or any location where mechanical sounds will disturb you — unless you don’t mind the intermittent sound of a HDD loudly spinning. Notes: I read some forums that say the “loudness” is not unusual with some of the red pro models (WD gold models are loud too apparently), but, hey, as long as they run well…

I BOUGHT 2 HARD DRIVES FROM NEW EGG AND AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF TESTING WITH QNAP; THEY WERE DEEMED, DEFECTIVE OK......THAT HAPPENS. BUT I HAD INSTALLED THESE INTO A NAS AND HAD TAKEN OVER 2 WEEKS GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH QNAP IN MY SPARE TIME TO DIAGNOSE THE HARD DRIVES. NEW EGG WILL NOT TAKE THEM BACK BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING. I HAD PACKAGING FOR 2 OTHER HARD DRIVES (BLACK). SAME SIZE BOX ETC. ETC. WILL NOT TAKE BACK AND GIVE NEW ONES!!!! WHAT IF THESE WERE IN THE NAS FOR A YEAR? AM I SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE BOXES FOR THE HARD DRIVES UNTIL THE DAY I THROW THEM OUT? DOES NEW EGG THINK I AM INCAPABLE OF PACKAGING UP 2 HARD DRIVES SAFELY? I WAS REFERRED TO WESTERN DIGITAL TO GET REPLACEMENTS. THIS MEANT OPENING AN ACCOUNT AND SENDING THE HARD DRIVES TO THEM AND WAITING FOR REPLACEMENTS........WHICH CAME AND DO WORK. THE POINT IS, THAT TOOK ANOTHER 2 AND A HALF WEEKS. SO FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE OF DEFECTIVES UNTIL I HAVE WORKING HARD DRIVES TOOK OVER A MONTH. ALL THIS FOR 2 DEFECTIVE HARD DRIVES THAT WERE ROUGHLY 2 WEEKS OLD. NEVER AGAIN NEW EGG!!!!

Bought two 18TB drives to upgrade a volume on my NAS which is used primarily as a media server. I have a WD MyCloudPR4100. These drives make so much noise that it can drive you insane. They constantly sound like theyre reading/writing even though no files are being accessed. I suggest if you buy these that you have your server in a closet or somewhere that it cant be heard. I am going to be returning these and instead picked up two 14tb RED drives running at 5400rpms. So far the 14tb drives are just as quiet as the 6tb I had in there.

So far works like a dream, I know it was built for businesses but I am using it for large video files, video games, etc. Hasnt failed on me and its been about 2 months since install. Was hoping to transfer my O.S. onto it but I just ended up wiping the original hard drive and then reinstalling all my games on this one.

Does its job fine, good performance, good value, appropriate warranty. One *major* issue: The firmware on this drive is quite eager to park the heads. If youre using this on a smaller home server, the frequency of head loading/unloading can be high enough to void the warranty well before 5 years. Please carefully monitor SMART attribute #192 (Power-Off_Retract_Count). If this value is rising at a significant rate (more than 20 per day), I *strongly* recommend disabling APM as otherwise youve got a decent chance of an early device failure.

I purchased 5 18TB drives and have only received 3 so far. One was a 6TB drive that was mislabeled on the unopened package. I got a replacement and it was the proper size drive, but was DOA. The two drives that have worked are running great. I was able to backup just over 20TB between them and the speeds have been as expected.
