These took under a minute each to install into my Synology DS920+ NAS. Since it was all new gear, I let it do a through drive check as part of initializing which took a long time. I think it may ave been about two days. In theory, I could have used it during this time, but I just started it and ignored it. During installation, the 920 whines about any accessories (memory, drives) that arent Synologys own and that included these. On the 922, they change from whining to much more obnoxious contrived incompatibilities, but this combination was chosen because exactly once, during insteallation, it warns you that its not a supported combination and thats that. Probably if there were a support issue involving data loss, theyd remind you of that oath you took to not complain, but in reality this is a very common combination that works quite well. Fan and normal noise is quite minimal. There was a noticeable clunk during a head seek. I reduced this by offlining the unit so I could remove power then applying the fuzzy half of a hook-and-loop fastener to the bottom of the bottom rail. That gave it support and a little bit of padding so the metal cage didnt serve as a drum skin for the oh-so-tiny motion that got amplified when transferred to the sheet metal. Im looking forward to getting many, many years from these drives, like I did from the 4TB WD these are replacing. Those drives have no reading errors. Size grows and no drives are infallible, so I opted to replace them on my schedule (OK, and on Amazon Day special. :-) ) instead of letting the drive pick its own replacement day, taking my data with it.

So far works like a dream, I know it was built for businesses but I am using it for large video files, video games, etc. Hasnt failed on me and its been about 2 months since install. Was hoping to transfer my O.S. onto it but I just ended up wiping the original hard drive and then reinstalling all my games on this one.

I have some WD drives from 2009 that are still running (WD Cavier Black) with little to no bad sectors. Other drives I have since 2016 are performing similarly. This unit has better performance characteristics due to the cache size. If it last as well as my previous units, I will be very happy with the purchase.

These drives don’t have all 3 side mounting screw holes. Only the fore and aft. WD seems to have tried to save a few Pennie’s by omitting the middle 6-32 mount holes which my drive carrier requires for 4 point securing. Had to hang these off just the back 2 screws. Hope they last. Should have stayed with seagate.

As an IT professional, I have replaced my share of hard drives and I was impressed to say that of all the drives I have replaced over a 20 year period of bring in IT, I only have replaced 3-4 failed Western Digital drives. And all of these were 5-11 years old. They ran a good life. Today for the first time ever, I received a DOA WD drive. The worst part is that it was one of their professional top of the line drives, a WD Red Pro! What a let down this was. I have lost a lot of confidence on WD after this experience and can no longer blindly recommend them. Its now worth looking at the competition before making a decision. I still have more bad than good experiences with WD, but getting a DOA Pro drive is not ok.

I recommend to buy this. Do not see the negative comments, few might have issues and few people dont know how to use it. It is silent and functions very smooth

AFTER NOTE: Finally, resolution...It took several (at least 5) interactions with Customer Service, none of which were possible by phone, but the issue is finally resolved. Western Digital replaced the drive (finally agreeing to pay shipping back the bad drive to them). It took additional attempts for acknowledgement of my return of the bad drive shipment back to them, which then finally activated the full 5 year warranty on the replacement drive. Their default is 120 days, seriously, so if you do buy this and have to return it, be diligent! They just seem overwhelmed in Customer Service. ORIGINAL Which is worse? A hard drive with a 5-year warranty that dies after 33 DAYS, or the company that makes them --in this case Western Digital -- responding unreasonably with rigid rules that are far from appropriate. From my point of view, for a business, the purchase of the hard drive is not just the sheet metal and magnetic discs needed to put them together, it is the company backing the drive, ensuring its reliability. To be fair, I have owned 3 Red drives used previously for three years without a problem. This specific purchase was for 4 drives to be used in a Synology DS918+ NAS. I moved up to these Pro drives because I was concerned with the period AFTER 3 years, not the first month! The drives installed easily, seemed (on the outside) to be constructed well and were packaged appropriately for shipment. Yesterday, the NAS reflected significant degradation in one of these 4 drives, to the point of not being usable. I figured even good companies have a few buggy drives so I went to the WD website, which was buggy in and of itself and incapable of processing an RMA. So then I called the company this morning. I was informed that I could ship the drive back to them (AT MY EXPENSE) and they would ship me another drive (re-certified) upon receipt. 10-15 business days (thats two-three weeks, folks). The alternative was I could get premium service, if I gave them my credit card number:They would reserve the full retail price of the drive on my card, ship me a NEW drive now, and release the amount on hold when they got the drive back. Again, shipping on my dime. When I pointed out that it was 33 days (the drive had itself only actually been at work for about three weeks), they said that they would escalate the case, and try to get free shipping, but that if I wanted a NEW drive, they would still need my credit card...even though I explained to them that I was happy to return the drive and wait for them to get it before shipping me the new drive (I bought another drive as a standby for the NAS). They said they would escalate and see. That was about 12 hours ago...still waiting to see. As a business person, I rely on machines...but more importantly I rely on the good faith of the companies producing those machines. When the machine fails -- which happens -- I expect the company to back them up, and do what is right. Right now, I cant even get a straight answer from WD. As some in Washington are known to say SAD!!! Two stars in respect of the WD drives that have worked for me in the past.

Bought two 18TB drives to upgrade a volume on my NAS which is used primarily as a media server. I have a WD MyCloudPR4100. These drives make so much noise that it can drive you insane. They constantly sound like theyre reading/writing even though no files are being accessed. I suggest if you buy these that you have your server in a closet or somewhere that it cant be heard. I am going to be returning these and instead picked up two 14tb RED drives running at 5400rpms. So far the 14tb drives are just as quiet as the 6tb I had in there.

My older hard drive and external enclosure failed (it was time for sure). This was a solid replacement to use for Time Machine backup. I partitioned into two for additional file storage for movies. Plus you can hardly hear this drive spinning.
